Nick Dugmore's love affair with Kangaroo Island began on a surf trip in a banana-yellow Ford Falcon in 2008. That trip never made it past KI — and he never really left.
After vintages across the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide Hills, Bordeaux, New Zealand, and Canada, Nick and his partner Rebecca established Stoke Wines in 2016 on a stunning north-east facing site near Stokes Bay.
Their approach is hands-off: no additions beyond occasional sulfur, with a deep focus on quality in the vineyard. The result is cool-climate, medium-bodied wines that are expressive, food-friendly, and true to their wild island home.
Three expressions that capture the spirit of Kangaroo Island.
From the Cassini vineyard — whole bunch pressed, native fermented and split between barrel and tank. Textural, aromatic, with a crisp finish shaped by the island's maritime influence.
Pinot Gris
Cool-fermented with partial barrel ageing in old French oak, stirred on lees with partial malo. Bright aromatics layered with texture and complexity from the False Cape vineyard.
Sauvignon Blanc
A vibrant 70/30 Syrah-Pinot Noir blend. The Syrah brings red fruit and candy-like aromatics from carbonic maceration, while Pinot adds structure and depth. Medium-bodied and endlessly drinkable.
Syrah & Pinot NoirNick and Bec make wines with conviviality in mind — lighter to midweight styles that range from drink-now to wines with structure and longevity. Minimal intervention after a huge focus on quality in the vineyard, and a deep connection to the wild, windswept landscapes of Kangaroo Island.
